Women and men problems in Hamdi Koç's novels

Hamdi Koç, one of the contemporary writers of Turkish literature, has many novels in which he deals with the relationship between men and women and the phenomenon of masculinity. A general study on the works of the author, who writes about the issue of masculinity in his novels in the context of gender, has not been conducted so far; it has been limited only to certain works. In this study, eight different novels of Hamdi Koç, which have been published in total, have been analysed in the context of women's and men's issues. Although the main purpose of our study is to analyse the experiences and problems of the man, which Koç tries to make visible by highlighting his role and status in society, the problems in the novels are titled as women's and men's problems due to the fact that the author also brings up the issue of women while dealing with the issue of masculinity. In the study, which consists of three separate sections, the phenomenon of masculinity presented by Hamdi Koç in terms of gender and the constructive/destructive response of this phenomenon in both genders were tried to be analysed in a broad framework based on the research on women and masculinity in the literature. In this direction, the author's novels titled Songs of Child Death (1995), Angels Become Men (2002), God of Flowers (2003), The Land of Good Wishes (2005), Pieces from the Heart (2005), An Old Husband's Afternoon (2009), Naked and Alone (2013), Alone, Mr. Peyami! (2017) are analysed to determine the way in which male-female problems are handled and processed; and in the conclusion section, the author's approach to the issue is given with the findings obtained from the whole study.
