Tarteeb tradition in Hanafi jurisprudence: The sample case of al-'İkd al-Nazeem and its critical edition

The style of books in the field of fiqh differs according to their authors, subjects and periods. Tarteeb which means to rearrange disorganised text is one of the most efficient methods of writing fiqh books. There are various books written using the method of tarteeb in Hanefi jurisprudence literature. Mustafa b. Hayreddin's al-'Iqd al-Nazeem is an exemplary Hanafi work using such a method. The current study consists of an introduction and four chapters. Introduction provides information about the importance and the aim of the study as well as the method of research. The first chapter, which is the backbone of the study, introduces methods employed in Hanafi jurisprudence literature and various types of works in the field. It also acquaints the reader with definition, advantage and varieties of tarteeb in detail. The second chapter focuses on four types of fiqh literature, i.e. furu', usul, qawa'id, lughah, and examines each one with an example case. In the third chapter, Mustafa b. Hayreddin's biography and scholarship as well as an analyses of al-'Iqd al-Nazeem are presented. The fourth chapter is critical edition of the work based on a comparison of author's copy with other copies observing guidelines of critical editions of ISAM.
