The development of imprisonment and prisons from the past to the present

In this study, "The Development of Imprisonment and Prisons from the Past to the Present" were chosen as the thesis subject. In this direction, the aim of the research is to study the understanding of imprisonment which has changed with emergence of prisons in the modern sense. Within the scope of the study, firstly the purposes of punishment and punishment were emphasized. Later, the historical development of imprisonment was included with distinction in comparative law and Turkish law. In addition, development in comparative law has been divided into the period before the birth of prisons and the period after the birth of prisons. After the historical development of imprisonment, the current system was mentioned, imprisonment was examined in line with decisions of the European Court of Human Rights. In next section, statistical data about the prisons were given and the criticisms against the prisons were discussed. In the last part, a general evaluation of research is given by talking about the different practices of women's prisons and their improvement.
