Historical development of prisons

Since the formation of the world, humankind has been in a constant state of progress, in parallel with the saying "the only constant is change". When human history is examined as a whole, we see that a different contradiction emerges in almost every issue where contradictions shape the world. Just as there is hot versus cold, low versus high, there is also evil versus general goodness. The birth and starting point of crime begins exactly here. There was a need to define the evil that disturbs the society in general and creates unhappiness. In the classical words that encompass these definitions, it can be said that crime is a state of doing evil. Human beings, seeking spiritual satisfaction as well as physical existence, have always sought absolute good. Human beings, who can somehow meet their physical needs such as nutrition and shelter, have taken it upon themselves to want a feeling of spiritual satisfaction. After the story of the existence of the crime is evaluated, the emergence of punishment will be discussed. Again, from a classical perspective, it is thought that punishing those who do evil will make society peaceful. In the religious sense, the one who does evil is a sinner and can only be purified from his sins through worship. In this study, the punishment adventure of crime will be discussed and subsequently the developing prison mechanics will be examined. The emergence of the idea of imprisonment, the civilization and geography where it was first applied will be explained. Afterwards, the prison phenomenon, its need, development, systems and types in Turkey will be discussed.
