Determination and evaluation of proverbs in Harîrî's Makâmât

It can be said that Makâmât-ı Harîrî is a work that has not been surpassed in the literature of Makâmât. Although many commentaries and researches have been made on the work, there has been no study on the proverbs in it. The work, which includes more than two hundred proverbs, seems to have the volume of an independent book of proverbs. It is extremely important to identify the proverbs that Harîrî sprinkles between stories and poems, and to determine the full text of the proverbs that she is content with by pointing to the original with a few words. As a matter of fact, literal translations were included in the Ottoman translations of the work, since some expressions were not noticed as proverbs, and thus, meaning deficiencies emerged. It is important to determine the full text of the proverbs, to determine the reasons for their emergence and in which situations they will be used, and to transfer them to Turkish as a proverb or idiom. This study aims to contribute to the making of more accurate translations between Turkish and Arabic by revealing the proverbs in the work and showing the Turkish equivalents of the concept to be expressed. The study prepared by considering the commentary on the work, the Ottoman translation and academic articles; It reveals the reasons for the emergence of the proverbs selected from Makâmât, their stories and different proverbs expressing the same meaning, by identifying them from the precedent books written in the first six centuries.
