Factors affecting hospital disaster management performance

Hospitals are among the institutions most needed after devastating disasters. Therefore, increasing the disaster management capacities of hospitals will increase the quality and efficiency of the service provided during the post-disaster response and recovery period. The aim of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the disaster management performance of Giresun Training and Research Hospital according to the opinions of the hospital staff. In the study, data were collected from 797 healthcare personnel by survey method between July and August 2023. The hospital's disaster management performance was used as the dependent variable in the study. Demographic characteristics, staff working conditions, disaster training, hospital disaster plan awareness and hospital disaster plan duty were used as independent variables. In addition, the arrangement of hospital belongings against disaster risks, staff self-sufficiency, staff coordination, inter-institutional coordination and disaster preparedness were also used as independent variables. The direction and strength of the relationship between hospital disaster management performance and independent variables were revealed by ordinal logistic regression. As a result, hospital disaster management performance is at a good level. Staff who receive adequate disaster training and have more knowledge about the hospital disaster plan think that hospital disaster management performance is higher. According to hospital personnel, disaster preparedness and inter-institutional coordination are the factors that increase hospital disaster management performance the most. It is expected that this study will provide insight to scientists, decision makers and practitioners working in the field of hospital disaster planning and management.
