ABSTRACT Examining The Factors That Affect Sleeping Needs Of The Patients In The Hospital It is important to meet the fundamental human necessities in order to sustain the continuity of human's life. Sleep is a fundamental, physiological life necessity affected by pataphysiological, physical and environmental factors. Preparing a comfortable environment for the patient and assisting him to meet the fundamental needs are important nursing responsibilities. For this reason, determining and removing the factors that prevent the comfortable sleep for the patient, providing and keeping a normal sleeping process are all important nursing responsibilities. This work is made for investigating the factors that affect the sleeping need of the adult patients in order to constitute fundamental data for nursing enterprise. 400 patients, who stayed at least 3 days in Balcali Hospital of Medical Faculty at University of Çukurova between 01.01.2002-31.02.2002, able to perceive time, human, place accurately and able to understand and answer the questions, participated in this research. All the data collected in the questionnaire forms which identify the patients and determine the factors affect the sleeping necessity. It is determined the average age of the patients is 44.7, 723% of the lie in internal clinics, 65.5% of them stayed in 3-12 days in the hospital, 70.8% of them have slept between 5-9 hours in the hospital, 40.5% of them have changed their sleeping pattern; 64.8% of them because of noise, 53.0% of them affected because of pain and 45 J % of them affected because of changing in sleeping and getting up time; in order to solve their sleeping trouble, 53.8% of them walk around and in order to have a more comfortable sleep 29.0% of them suggested something. It is observed that their sleeping time varies from clinics they lied and changing in sleeping pattern when they lied in the hospital changes by the help of lying in a hospital before. It is also determined that all of these pairs does not depend on each other: average sleeping time and age, days stayed in the hospital; sleeping in daytime and days stayed in the hospital; sleeping troubles shown in the hospital and clinics, days stayed in the hospital. When the results of the research are evaluated, they will be used in an education program which is aimed to increase the nursing care and quality of the nursing care.
