The correlation between learned helplessness perceived by female health care workers in hospitals, and self efficacy and coping strategies

This study aimed to examine the correlation between Learned Helplessness perceived by female healthcare workers in hospitals, and Self-Efficacy and Coping Strategies. The sample of this descriptive study consisted of female doctors, nurses and room support staff between August 2021 and May 2022 (n=274). The Personal Information Form, The Learned Helplessness Scale, The Coping Strategies Scale and The General Self-Efficacy Scale were used to collect data. Using the data collected, it was seen that there was a significant negative correlation between learned helplessness and problem-solving dimension (r= ̶ 0.234, p<0.05) and self-efficacy (r= ̶ 0.370, p<0.05), a significant positive correlation with avoidance dimension (r= 0.290, p<0.05). There was a significant positive correlation between general self-efficacy and problem-solving dimension (r = 0.411, p<0.05) and a significant negative correlation with avoidance dimension (r= ̶ 0,209, p<0.05). There was also a statistically significant impact of learned helplessness perceived by female healthcare workers on self-efficacy (β= ̶ 0,426, p<0.05). It was evaluated if there was any mediator role in this impact. According to the results of this model, it was decided that direct impact was significant but the impact coefficient decreased and it was a partial mediator (β = ̶ 0.301, p<0.05). Finally, in this study, it was understood that there was a significant negative correlation between the learned helplessness of female health-care workers and self-efficacy variables and coping strategies acted as mediators. It is recommended to provided in-service training to decrease the experience of learned helplessness and increase the level of self-efficacy and strengthen coping strategies in female health-care workers.
