Incidences of ocular diseases observed in the cattle, sheep and goats in hatay and its vicinity

INC DENCES OF OCULAR D SEASES OBSERVED IN THE CATTLE,SHEEP AND GOATS IN HATAY AND ITS V C N TYIn this study, it was aimed to highlight the importance and economic impacts of theocular diseases on the animal institutions by investigating their incidences in the cattle, sheepand goats bred in Hatay and its vicinity. For this purpose, 9906 cattle, 2549 sheep and 1418goats were used. Fourteen different ocular diseases from 1012 cattle, 6 different diseases from204 sheep and 58 goats were detected. Of the cattle, 219 were holstein, 302 swiss-brown, 201simental, 164 cross-bred, 107 native, 14 jersey and 5 charolais. It was found a statisticallysignificant difference (P<0,001) between the breeds when the incidences of the oculardiseases were evaluated.Among the cases with ocular diseases, 279 (27.57 %) had conjunctivitis, 204 (20.16%) keratitis, 123 (12.15 %) infectious keratoconjunctivitis ( IBK ), 83 (8.20 %) epibulbardermoid, 68 (6.72 %) amaurozis, 85 (8.40 %) eye lid problems, 47 (4.64% ) leukoma, 26(2.57 %) buftlmus, 25 (2.47 %) korneal abscess, 20 (1.98 %) skleritis, 15 (1.48 %) irisstafiloma, 14 (1.38 %) corneal ulcer, 12 (1.19 % ) prolapsed gland of third eyelid and 11 (1.09% ) ocular foreign bodies. When the ocular diseases of the current study were evaluatedstatistically with respect to seasonal and month factors, no meaningful differences ( P>0,05 )were found between them.In conclusion, this study revealed that ophthalmic diseases were widespread in Hatayregion, the disease like BK appeared a great loss to economy but the majority of thesediseases were found as treatable in field conditions.Key words: Ocular Diseases, Cattle, Sheep, Goat, Hatay
