Developing a tool for measuring safety culture in aviation: A research on Turkish pilots

In this study, it was aimed to develop a scale which embraces safety culture of the Turkish pilots with an integratedapproach, includes the theoretical basis of the concept, and provide validity and reliability criteria. Thus, it is aimed to fill an important gap in the literature. There are four chapters in the research. The theoretical infrastructure of the research is embraced in the first three sections; empirical research findings are discussed in the last section. The population of the research is first officers and captain pilots working for airlines in Turkey. The research process was handled in four stages: The selection of the population and sample, the development of data collection tools, the establishment of hypotheses and the reporting of research findings. The mixed-method, in which quantitative and qualitative analysis methods are used together, has been adopted as the research method. As a result of the research, a scale consisting of three sub-dimensions and 16 items called "Safety Culture Scale Of Airline Pilots" was developed. The pilots' tasks, places where they took pilot training, positions, educational levels, ages, periods of service and hours of flight were compared in terms of the dimensions of the safety culture. In the study, it is also aimed to determine the opinions of air traffic controllers and dispatchers about the possible mistakes of pilots during flight and briefing.
