Investigation of the effect of the airport on regional tourism: GAP Airport example

The current tourism potential in Şanlıurfa, one of the oldest cities in the world, is increasing rapidly day by day. Especially with the discoveries of Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe as a result of archaeological excavations, the world's attention has focused on Şanlıurfa. These discoveries have had a positive impact on Şanlıurfa's current tourism potential. In order to visit these discovered historical sites, transportation to Şanlıurfa is mostly done by air. The aim of this study is to measure and evaluate the socio-cultural impact of GAP Airport on society, as well as its economic contribution to travel agencies, food and beverage businesses, hotel businesses and other supply companies that support the tourism sector, and therefore to the development of tourism in the region. In this context, a total of 27 interview data were obtained from travel agencies, hotel managements, public institutions/organizations and NGOs operating in Şanlıurfa. Additionally, an individual survey was conducted on 397 people living in Şanlıurfa. In line with the data obtained, an analysis was made on the impact of GAP Airport on regional tourism. The fact that this study, which will measure the impact of GAP Airport on regional tourism for the first time, shows the importance of the research. According to the results obtained, GAP Airport will contribute to the tourism, cultural and economic structure, industry, education, health, etc. sectors in Şanlıurfa and its surroundings. It reveals the importance of new investments, incentives and supports for the development and development of the region.
