II ABSTRACT MASTER THESIS TEACHING OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Özlem BEKTAŞ Supervisor: Yrd.Doç.Dr. Ali Sinan BİLGİLİ 2001-PAGE:296 Jury: Yrd.Doç.Dr. Ali Sinan BİLGLİ In this reseach, it is investigated the socio-economic level of first, second, and third class students, the attitudes of this students in social sciences, the methods, techniques, and the material used by the teachers in teaching, the quality of schools, the features of physical contitions of the schools, the presence of laboratory, physical environment of the schools, and the effects of the teachers on student achievement. The purpose of study is to obtain the difficulties and the reasons of in teaching, and to present solutions. The content of the study is limited to applications to the first, second and third class students and social science teachers in the schools in Erzurum. The participants consist of 312 students and 69 teachers. The achievement test were applied to the students, and the questionnaire was both applied to the students. In the study, these results were implicated: There is a significant correlation between the methods, techniques, materials and the students' achievement. It is found that there is a high level correlation between the socio-economic level of the parents and the students' achievement. There is a correlation between the attitudes of the students and the achievement. It is found that the education level of the parent are correlated to the achievement of the students. The physical conditions and the events are related to the achievement. The achivement is correlated to the environmental factors. There is a correlation between the quality of the school and the students' achievement.
