Özet (EN)
For centuries efforts have been made to strengthen human rights. However, it is often forgotten that animal rights are a part of human rights. It is a known fact that animals have been exploited throughout history. In recent years, legal regulations on animal rights have increased and gained momentum. For many years, animals have sought a legal position. In this process, they were subjected to excessive experiments, torture and ill-treatment. Animals, which are sentient creatures, were characterized as property in the past. It could not gain a status before the law. In the legislation of countries where animals are no longer considered as property, they have more criminal protection. Animal rights in Turkey are regulated in the Animal Protection Law No. 5199. It is regulated by a separate law. This law was amended in 2021. Some additions were made to the law with the "Law on the Amendment of the Animal Protection Law and the Turkish Penal Code". Provisions covering animals in comparative law and in Turkey are found in the Civil Code, the Code of Obligations and the Constitution.
