Mechanical characterization of sheet moulding compounds

Abstract (EN)

In this study, 25% glass fiber reinforced, unsaturated polyester matrix, sheet moulding compound composite sample plates were characterized. Samples were taken perpendicular to the manufacturing direction and parallel the direction of manufacturing and compared. Density test, thermal aging test, tensile test, three-point bending test, Izod impact test and axial fatigue test were performed on flat plate samples that were 25% chopped glass fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester SMC composite. Mechanical properties to predict complete life time (fatigue) and the required design parameters for use were identified in this study.
