The place of Hekimbaşı Mustafa Behçet Efendi in the tip history Tertîb-i Eczâ, Kolera Risalesi, Çiçek Aşisi Risalesi, Ruhiye Risalesi adli eserlerinin transkripsiyon

ABSTRACT This study includes Mehmet Behçet Efendi's, who has served as head doctor during the reigns of Selim III., Mustafa IV., Mahmud II., life phases, his contribution to the Ottoman medicine history, and transcription and evaluation of some of his studies. In a chronological order, prioritising his medical aspect, we have tried to deal with his studies that he has done to bring the developments, which he has followed abroad, to develop Ottoman medicine during he has served as head doctor. When he was abroad to improve his foreign language, especially Latin, he produced many studies, research and translated works. We have made firm twelve of these studies, and have attempted to evaluate some of them transcribing into contemporary Turkish. The very beginning of his head doctor position, Mehmet Behçet Efendi, presenting reports about opening a western type hospital to the Sultan of that time, has been known with his efforts to compose translated works to make them easily understandable and to transform the medical language into Turkish. For that purpose, he has attempted to compose the first Turkish glossary of medical terms with very few Turkish students. Additionally, he has attempted to reform the Ottoman medicine group, consisted of mainly strangers and non-muslims, supporting Turkish doctors. In our day, the date of 14th May is celebrated as the doctor's day, because Mehmet Behçet Efendi has paved the way for the opening of Tıbhane-i Amire in 14th May 1827, the first modern medical school, providing the basis for Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Adliye-i Şâhâne.
