Reflections of hellenistic moldmade bowls on unique ceramic sufaces

Abstract (EN)

Megarian bowls one of the most important ceramic forms of Hellenistic Period were described by Otto Benndorf for the first time in 1883. This bowls are drinking cups which made from moulds with hemisphere-shape, footless, handless and their on outer surface they have relief decorations, patterns and figures. Name of the "Megarian Bowls" was given by Otto Bendorf assuming that they had been made in Magara ancient city of Attica Region in Greece. Archaeologist Suzan Rotroff also has accepted "moulded bowl" name and these bowls are made in imitation of metal bowls continue to exist until the middle of the first century BC. In the first part of the study visual and theoretical data about Hellenistic Period collected and compiled then have been submitted as summary for thesis. In the light of these statements decorative features of Hellenistic Period Megarian Bowls were compared to standard and superior formats of other bowls. The third part of the study has been given to the works of national and international artist's studies. Production and decoration techniques are used in sample works which selected from the artists. Sample works selected from artists analyzed with technical and aesthetic perspectives by using short information, visual materials taking consideration their production and ornament technics. In the last section is given to applied works. Inspired by Hellenistic Megarian bowls in this study design, manufacturing and decorating processes are discussed in detail. This section primarily consists of research and design of practical work has been given about the preparation phase. Then, the applications used in the forming, decorating, first firing, glazing and firing methods are described. In the last section used in the production of thesis work produced under the bowl, decor and glazing techniques, firing analyzed values are cosmetic and plastic arts. As a result, the scope of this study, different decor inspired by Hellenistic Megarian bowls and bowls produced by firing technique works, to contemporary ceramic art in terms of providing important information and resources is expected to contribute.
