Women image in Greek tragedia and comedia

Tragedy and comedy poets, prominent artists of the Classical Age (5th century BC), are important intellectuals who shed light on the social issues and life of their periods. These poets, namely, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Aeschylus, Aristophanes etc., made themselves a remarkable position in their own time with the works they authored. They have had a far-reaching influence that was not limited to the period and society in which they lived, but took on an identity that have transcended the ages. The works of these poets, who were loved all over Hellas, have been the subject of various studies. These poets influenced the socio-cultural environment in which they lived, while they were naturally affected by the culture they grew up. Therefore, their views and their perspectives on the image of women are very important in terms of understanding the Hellenic society. In that period, women were excluded from almost a large part of the public life in Athens and their legal status was at the discretion of men. Tragedy and comedy poets also provide important data to our gender study through their fictionalized female characters. In the eyes of these poets, the image of woman was sometimes associated with evil and sometimes it became an image of peace. While they wrote different characters from the image of women in the Hellenic society, they also wrote female characters in line with the perception of the society. Women have been the subjects of a wide range of creative thinking ranging from women who do terrible things for revenge to women who do not hesitate to sacrifice themselves for their loved ones, from women who have been insulted and victimized due to war to women who went on strike to stop the war. Considering the social equivalent of Hellenic tragedy and comedies and their effects on today's world, it can be understood how valuable these images of women are in terms of gender studies.
