The effect of the lidocaine gel applied to hemodialysis patients on invasive pain during needle puncture

Özet (EN)

The study was conducted between September 2018 and April 2019 in order to evaluate the effect of lidocaine gel applied to hemodialysis patients on invasive pain during fistula injection. Permission was obtained from the ethics committee, institution and patients before the study. The patients who met the study criteria were divided into intervention (34) and placebo (34) groups. The data of the study were collected with questionnaire and Visuel Analogue Skala (VAS). Patients in the intervention group; 5% lidocaine gel (2 g) was applied by the researcher 30 minutes before the needle entry to the fistula, considering the previous needle entry site. The patients who completed the 30-minute period under the supervision of the investigator were taken to hemodialysis by the nurse. The process was done during three consecutive HD sessions and was asked to mark the level of pain that patients felt after each needle entry on the VAS. Patients in the placebo group; was applied with the help of physiological saline sterile sponge by the researcher 30 minutes before the needle entry to the fistula, considering the previous needle entry site. The data obtained from the study were analyzed with the number of percent, Chi-square, T test and repetitive measurements with variance tests. The mean pain score of the patients in the intervention group was 4.50±3.30 before the application of lidocaine gel and decreased to 3.52±2.67 after the first HD session and to 3,41±2,67 after the second HD session and increased to 3.55±2.31 after the third HD session (p> 0.05). The main pain score of the patients in the placebo group was 4.47 ± 3.30 before the physiological saline application and decreased to 4.32±3.14 after the first HD session and to 4.17±2.70 after the second HD session and to 3.88±2.79 after the third HD session. (p> 0.05). In accordance the results of the study; There were no significant differences in pain scores of four repetitive measurements of placebo and gel patients (p> 0.05).
