Evaluation of the chronic kidney disease patients' treatments under hemodialysis treatment by gender

Chronic Kidney Disease defined as the presence or absence of kidney damage and level of kidney function, has the greatest impact among chronic diseases when it comes to the public health problem. During treatment, Chronic Kidney Disease patients have to face negative impacts of being dependent to some devices and people in both physical, psychological, social, economic dimensions and family, social and business life dimensions. In this research; the aim was to evaluate the chronic disease patients' quality of life through "Gender Role Perspective" who are under the treatment of hemodialysis treatment. This descriptive research was conducted at Başkent University Adana, Ankara and Istanbul Practice and Research Centers' Hemodialysis Centers. During this research all patient population over 18 years has been included in the research with freewill of acceptance. 378 patients meeting all requirements were attended to the research voluntarily. During data collection two questionnaire forms were used. The first one was applied face to face and the second one since it was a SF-36 questionnaire form was asked to fill by themselves. The mean age of the participants is 54±16,5 (19-85). When we compare the educational levels of the cities Ankara has the highest percentage of the high education (University &Masters: 32%) where as Adana has the lowest (University &Masters: %3). The analyze of the interaction of components of SF-36 questionnaire form (Physical Functioning, Psychological Functioning, General Health, Global) and gender showed that male patients' quality of life (44,7±19,2) is higher than women's (36,1±7). The first marriage age is also decreasing with the low levels of education (primary: 17±2,9; middle: 18,1±3,6; high: 23,8±4,9;University: 25,7±3). There is a negative correlation between the number of pregnancy, live birth and all the components of quality of life (r= -0,12). The components of quality of life is also rising with the educational level and this relation has been found statistically significant (p=0,000). When all cities analyzed through the answers they have given to the suggestions based on gender discrimination, Adana has the most discriminative answers (Virginity is important: %97; If a woman is beaten by her husband then she deserves it: %64,8; If a man is making money enough to live with then his wife shouldn't work: % 81,2; The main duty of a woman is motherhood: %90,3). When it comes to the total score of the suggestions, the results has shown that the most discriminative city is Adana (5,3±4,1) and the most equitable city is Ankara (13,2±6,0).
