The compatibility of nursing diagnoses used in nurses' care plans with the NANDA-I taxonomy

Objective: This study was conducted to determine the compatibility of nursing diagnoses identified by nurses in clinical settings with the nursing diagnoses listed in the NANDA-I taxonomy. Material and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted between June 2024 and September 2024 with a total of 510 nurses working at Aydın Adnan Menderes University Practice and Research Hospital, Aydın State Hospital, Aydın Atatürk State Hospital, and Aydın Maternity and Child Diseases Hospital. Nursing diagnoses are recorded via electronic information systems in the participating state hospitals, while they are recorded manually in the university hospital. Data were collected using a nurse identification form and a NANDA-I compliance assessment form developed by the researchers. Chi-square and percentage-frequency tests were used in data analysis. Results: A total of 510 nurses from four hospitals participated in the study, and information was included from the care plans of 1,706 patients. The mean age of the participating nurses was 33.8±9.0, and 84.1% were female. The mean age of the patients in the care plans examined in the study was 54.3±21.9, and 46.7% were female. The most frequently used nursing diagnosis by the nurses was infection risk in the Security/Protection area. A total of 19 different nursing diagnoses were used in the data collected in the clinics, and 13 of these diagnoses were labeled according to NANDA-I terminology. None of these diagnoses had any defining characteristics or associated/risk factors. A significant difference was found between the nurses' age, years of practice, and hospital they worked in and their difficulty in identifying nursing diagnoses. Conclusion: In this study, it was found that nurses used 19 nursing diagnoses in clinical settings; however, only 13 of these diagnoses matched the NANDA-I taxonomy label, and none included defining characteristics or related/risk factors.
