The relationship between nurses' work motivation and their attitudes towards the profession

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between nurses' work motivation and attitudes towards the profession. Material and Method: The population of this descriptive and relationship-seeking research consists of a total of 511 nurses in a hospital serving in a province in the east of Turkey.The sample of the study consisted of 268 nurses who met the inclusion criteria. Personal Information Form, Nurse Work Motivation Scale (NWMS) and Attitude Towards Nursing Profession Scale (ATNS) were used to collect the data. Descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskall Wallis, t test in independent groups, variance and correlation analysis were applied in the analysis of the data. Results: In the study, it was found that 56.7% of the nurses chose the department they were working in voluntarily, 55.2% were satisfied with the department they were working in and 70.1% had no desire to change departments. The mean score of the nurses was calculated as 59.95±9.60 and the mean score of the nurses was calculated as 156.57±16.49. A positive and low level correlation was found between the NWMS and ATNS. Conclusion: It was determined that nurses' work motivation and attitudes towards the profession were above the medium level. It is recommended that the variables that are effective in increasing nurses' work motivation and positive attitudes towards the profession should be taken into consideration.
