The effect of nurses' profession commitment situation to tendency of making medical error

Introduction and the aim of study: Commitment to the profession is a factor that affect the individual's ability to work more attentively and selflessly and to reduce the tendency to make errors while performing his duties. This study was done with intend to determine the effect of nurses' profession commitment situation to tendency to make medical error. Material and method: The research that a kind of descriptive searcher was formed by nurses who work in the internal, surgical and intensive care units in state hospitals in the center and districts of a province. In the study, sample selection was not made and the study was completed with 144 nurses who work in these units, who participated in the study voluntarily and could be reached. The data of the study was collected between October 2017 and January 2018 by using the Descriptive Questionnaire, the Commitment to Profession in Nursing Scale and the Tendency Scale for Medical Failure in Nursing. In the analysis of the data, number, percentage, mean, t test, Mann Whitney-U test, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Kruskall Wallis Analysis and Correlation Analysis were used. Results: The mean age of the nurses who participated in the study was 27.31 ±5.36, 92.4% of them were women, 59.7% of them have bachelor's degree and 59.7% of them were working between 0-5 years. It was determined that the nurses' commitment to the profession was above the intermediate level (76.23 ±11) and the tendency to make medical error was low. It has been found that the educational and marital status affect commitment to profession, the medical errors which made in past affect the tendency to make medical error. There was a positive correlation between the total score of the Tendency Scale for Medical Error in Nursing and the total score of the Commitment to Profession in Nursing Scale and a positive and weak correlation between effort to show willingness the sub-dimensions of belief in target and values. Conclusion: It was determined that the level of commitment to the profession was a factor that reducing affected the tendency of medical error and the level of tendency to medical error decreased as the level of commitment to the profession increased. For this reason, inservice arrangements and policies should be developed to increase the commitment of nurses to the profession and to reduce medical error tendencies.
