Investigation of nurses' use of event reporting systems and affecting factors

The research was conducted as a descriptive study in order to examine the nurses' use of event reporting systems and the factors affecting them. The population of the study consisted of 348 nurses working in a public hospital. The research data were collected between April 2022 and June 2022, with 264 nurses who agreed to participate in the study, "Demographic Information Form", "İncident Reporting Awareness and Usage Information Form", " Reporting of Clinical Adverse Events Scale (Rocaes) ", " Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) " was collected by face-to-face interview technique using the "İncident Reporting Barriers Scale". Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, independent t tests, one-way analysis of variance (One-Way ANOVA) were used in the data analysis of the research. According to the results of the analysis, 44.7% of the nurses did not receive any incident reporting training, 39% of them witnessed or participated in an event related to patient safety that should be reported in the profession, however, only 37.9% reported an incident regarding patient safety. It was determined that 81.8% of the nurses had incident reporting system awareness and 55.3% had incident reporting usage knowledge. The RoCAES score of the nurses included in the study the mean was found to be 2.24±0.34 and their attitudes towards incident reporting were partially negative, the mean score of SAQ was found to be 3.44±0.50 and their safety attitudes were positive, the mean score of Incident Reporting Barriers Scale was found to be 2.70±0.72 and incident reporting obstacle perceptions were determined to be partially high. A statistically significant difference was found between the nurses' event reporting status and incident reporting attitudes, safety attitudes, and incident reporting barriers (p<0.05). As a result of the research, it was determined that the rate of encountering undesirable events was less than half of the nurses, but the reporting rate of those who encountered it was low. It has been determined that nurses receiving incident reporting training, incident reporting system awareness and usage information, incident reporting attitudes, safety attitudes and incident reporting barriers have an effect on reporting undesirable events for patient safety. It can be recommended to include nurses in the improvement activities or to provide feedback, and to evaluate the incident reporting attitudes, safety attitudes and incident reporting barriers of nurses at regular intervals.
