The relationship between intercultural sensitivity, empathic tendency, professional self-concept related factors in nursing students

Objevtive: The aim of the study is to determine the intercultural sensitivity, empathic tendency, professional self-concept and related factors of the students studying in the nursing department. Material and Methods: The study conducted for the purpose of the research is a quantitative cross-sectional study. The sample of the study consists of 316 nursing students studying at Aydın Adnan Menderes University. Survey method was used as a data collection tool in the study. The questionnaire used in the study consists of 4 parts. In the first part of the questionnaire, the personal information form containing demographic questions was used, in the second part the Empathic Tendency Scale (EES), in the third part the Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (DLS) and in the fourth part the Professional Self-Concept Scale (ÖHPBKS) was used. The data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed with the SPSS program. In order to determine which analysis method will be used in the study, normality analysis was performed and it was determined that the data showed normal distribution. In this context, independent sample t-test and ANOVA test were performed to determine the difference between the variables. In addition, in line with the ANOVA test results, Post-Hoc Tukey analysis was performed to determine which group was in favor of the differentiation in the groups with differences between them. In addition, Pearson Correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between variables. The findings were evaluated at the 95% confidence interval and 5% significance level. In all tests, the p-value was found to be less than 0.05 for statistical significance (p<0.05). Results: It was determined that there was a significant difference between the gender, grade levels and income perceptions of the nursing students participating in the study and their empathic tendency levels (p<0.05). In addition, it was determined that there was no significant difference between the place of life of the nursing students, the education levels of their parents and their empathic tendency levels (p>0.05). It was determined that there was a significant difference between the gender, grade levels, father education levels and intercultural sensitivity levels of the nursing students participating in the study (p<0.05). In addition, it was determined that there was no significant difference between the income perceptions of the nursing students, the place of life, the mother's education levels and the intercultural sensitivity levels of the students (p>0.05). It was determined that there was a significant difference between the gender, grade levels and maternal education levels of the nursing students and their professional self-perceptions (p<0.05). In addition, it was determined that there was no significant difference between the income perceptions of the nursing students, the place of life and the father's education levels and their professional self-perceptions (p>0.05). According to the results of the correlation analysis performed to determine the relationships; It was determined that there was a significant relationship between the empathic tendencies of the nursing students and their intercultural sensitivity levels (p<0.05). It was determined that there was a significant relationship between the empathic tendencies of the nursing students and their professional self-perception (p<0.05). In addition, it was determined that there was a significant relationship between the professional self-perception and intercultural sensitivity levels of nursing students (p<0.05). Conclusion: In line with the findings obtained, it has been determined that the change in any variable in which the empathic tendency levels, intercultural sensitivity levels and professional self-perceptions of the students studying in the nursing department affect each other also affects the others.
