Proportional change of dominant genotype among hepatitis C genotypes over the years

Introduction and Objective: In this study, the data of 239 patients (115 males and 124 females) who were infected with HCV and whose genotypes were determined from the patients who applied to the internal medicine clinics of Manisa Celal Bayar University Faculty of Medicine Hafsa Sultan Hospital between 2013 and 2023 were evaluated retrospectively. In our study, the 10-year data of the patients were analysed in two five-year periods and the change in the prevalence of the dominant genotype and other genotypes in Manisa was investigated. Results: Genotype 1b was found in 198 patients (82%), genotype 1a in 24 patients (10%), genotype 2 in 10 patients (4%), genotype 3 in 6 patients (2%) and genotype 4 in 1 patient (0.4%). Genotype 1b was found in 7 (64%) of 11 foreign national patients in the study group. When the ten-year data were divided into the first and last five years, a proportional decrease was found in the most common genotype 1b in the last five years compared to the first five years, while a significant increase was found in the data for genotype 1a and genotype 3 (p<0.005). 53 patients (22.1%) developed CHD and 8 patients (3.3%) were diagnosed with HCC. Conclusion: In this study, it was determined that the dominant genotype in Manisa province changed proportionally in two periods of five years each. During these periods, genotype 1b decreased from 89.9% to 73.3% and a numerically significant increase was observed in genotype 3 and genotype 1. However, it was observed that the data of foreign patients and Turkish citizens were similar and migration did not affect the HCV genotype distribution in the province.
