Light as a material in art of sculpture and narration possibilities

Today, light technologies are used as a material in sculpture with an interdisciplinary approach. This situation provides impressive and contemporary new expression opportunities in sculpture. In this thesis, the historical development of material use in sculpture art is examined and how light plays a transformative role in this process is investigated. It is examined how developing light technologies expand the definition of sculpture and transform the audience in this process extending from traditional materials to modern materials. Technological developments have enabled the conscious and dynamic use of light in sculptures. Artists have made a significant contribution to the evolution of sculpture with their ability to create emotional and aesthetic depths by using light in their works. Artists who have made light a fundamental element of their sculptures have enriched the expression in their works as a part of this evolution. Light has become a force that changes the form of sculpture and interacts with the audience. This evolution has expanded the boundaries of art and provided viewers with deep thought and emotional experiences. This interdisciplinary evolution, together with the direct transformation of light into sculpture, pushes the boundaries of art and opens the door to more exciting and innovative works in the future. This thesis study examines how artists create layers in their works by focusing on the possibilities of expression, together with the historical use of light as a material in sculpture. It aims to reveal how artists use these elements to add layers of meaning to their works by examining the historical examples, contemporary applications and theoretical foundations of light in sculpture. Without going into the technical details of physics and optics, the study is limited to addressing the process from the use of light as an auxiliary element in sculpture to its direct transformation into the work itself, with specific periodic focuses. The data was obtained mainly through literature review. Relevant source books, academic journals, articles, videos and previously prepared theses were examined; in addition, pages and contents created on the internet and social media related to the field were also used.
