Özet (EN)

In the paper discussed with the title Geometric Abstraction in the Art of Sculpture it has been aimed, by taking the concept of geometric abstraction in sculpture as basis, to explain the plastic judgments that developed and changed in sculpture during the period of time between the years 1900 and 1950. In parallel with the modernist sculpture which achieved its real identity during this period, in which radical changes took place, also the development of the concept of geometric abstraction is reflected. The definition of this revolution in the work of art is named as abstraction. While the initial usage of abstraction in the history of art is studied, attention is called to the understanding of abstraction in the art of the primitive and archaic periods. The ability of an artist of the primitive period to see and analyze the world does not predicate on an abstract expression but on a symbolization of the images of subjects and figures. As for the modern world, the reason that leads the individual to abstraction and geometric figures is the desire to reach self. The new meanings attributed to the images by the artist trying to reach self are re-manifested visually and spiritually, together with their past meanings. How the changes that occurred as a result of the Industrial Revolution by the end of the 19th century have affected the artists and correspondingly, the reasons of the emergence of abstraction and geometric abstraction have been tried to be examined, within the sections of artists and movements during the phase of geometric abstraction in the art of sculpture. While examining the subject, the artists who originated geometric abstraction and their works have been discussed and interpreted separately.
