A comparison of Hilmi Ziya Ülken's Morality of Love and Nurettin Topçu's Morality of Rebellion

Hilmi Ziya Ülken and Nurettin Topçu are two important philosopher of our recent history who lived in the same period of time. They talked about a moral crisis that people and states were moving away from morality and they presented different conceptions of state and social morality in order for a moral society and the state to be formed. In this context, their moral theories were developed to restore a moral character to society and the state, and they tried to systematize their search for solutions, whose basic starting point is as follows:While Ülken took the concepts of passion and love to the basis of his moral understanding, Topçu took the concepts of revolt and love to the basis of his understanding of morality. Although the concept of love occupies an important place in the basis of their moral understanding, it is noteworthy that they interpret the concept of love differently in terms of the general structure of their philosophical thoughts. While Ülken developed the political theory that he conceptualized as the Academic State or the State of the Order from the love-based moral theory, Topçu developed the political theory of Anatolian Socialism based on the moral theory that he based on love. This thesis compares Topçu's and Ülken's moral and political theories and evaluates their thoughts in terms of their approach and solutions to the moral crisis by determining that they stand in different places intellectually.
