The Prophet and social change

Islam is not merely a faith tradition but also the name of a belief system that has brought about significant transformations in the social, cultural, economic, and political structures of societies. The community established under the leadership of the Prophet Muhammad during the Medinan period presented the earliest models of a faith-centered civilization, within which profound changes occurred in individuals' values, roles, and social relations. This study aims to examine the social transformations pioneered by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from both historical and sociological perspectives, particularly within the framework of hadith studies. Social change exerts a broad influence ranging from individual behavior to the structure of social institutions. In this transformative process, the Prophet's leadership qualities, the inclusiveness of his message, and his strategic approach played a pivotal role. This research consists of two main sections. The first discusses the concept of change, its relationship with society, the Qurʾān's perspective on change, and the fundamental principles the Prophet followed in constructing this transformation. The second and central section examines the general conditions of the pre-Islamic (Jāhiliyyah) era in matters of belief, worship, and social and political life, followed by an analysis of the innovations and reforms introduced by the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) in these domains. The findings demonstrate that the Prophet did not oppose change; rather, he sought to construct a model of humane living on earth, guided by the Qurʾān and grounded in moral principles. The study analyzes the general structure of the Jāhiliyyah period, identifies the nature and characteristics of the transformation brought about by the Prophet, and highlights the methods he employed in this process. Ultimately, it concludes that the Prophet Muhammad's mission was not limited to religious guidance but also embodied sociological leadership. Aiming to cultivate a community grounded in monotheistic (Tawhid) consciousness, justice, morality, and awareness of rights and responsibilities, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) refrained from fully rejecting the traditions of the society in which he lived. Instead, he preserved social values that did not conflict with the fundamental principles of Islam and transformed those elements that contradicted justice, rights, equality, and ethical conduct.
