Abstract (EN)

This research deals with the works and architectural understanding of Architect Vedat Tek within the framework of the First National Architecture Movement, which was shaped during the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The study first examines how the political and social upheavals of the period and the westernization and nationalism movements affected the architectural environment. Then, it reveals how the family-palace relations that brought Architect Vedat Tek to prominence in a short time and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts education he received in Paris contributed to his integration of Ottoman-Seljuk motifs with contemporary construction techniques. Multifunctional buildings such as the Büyük Post Office, Defter-i Hakani, Haydarpaşa and Moda Piers, Mes'adet Inn, Şark Nemlizade Tobacco Warehouse extend the movement's search for a "national" identity to public, commercial and transportation areas. In conclusion, Vedat Tek's works are among the leading representatives of the movement that "synthesized the Ottoman-Seljuk heritage with contemporary construction technologies" and can be considered as unique examples that reflect the character of the period in Turkish architectural history where the processes of modernization and the construction of a "national" identity intersect.
