Markets and bazaars mentioned in Ibn Battûta's journal

A great deal of itinerants travelled around various geohraphies throughout the medieval age. During these travels, certain countries and their cities were seen and information about their cultural, economic and commercial activities were gathered. In this study, certain knowledge is reported about the physical structures of the bazaars and markets in cities that the well known itinerants İbn Battûta travelled, various bazaars and the jobs in these markets and bazaars. In İbn Battûta?s Journal, cities in whose bazaars various goods were for sale such as Basra, Bağdat, Musul, Halep, Küfe, Şiraz, Konya, Hacı Tarhan, Golem, in far east; Sinus-Sin, Malabar, Kalhat, in Arabia; Mekke, Aden were certain trade canters of the world throughout the medieval age. The markets and bazaars of most of these cities came into existance dating from VII. and VIII. Centuries. In IX. ve XI. Centuries, in the bazaars and markets of these cities, occupational groups started to emerge. As a result of this, executives of such occupational groups as greengrocers, perfumers , exchangers, drapers, jewelers, scrap dealers and threadders made up various bazaars. Markets and bazaars of these cities were flourished with the kinds of spices imported from the Far East and India, various kinds of furs brought over Poles and Central Asia, the goods brought by the merchant countries such as Venice, Genoese. It can be said that, this study brought a different kind of approach to the economic activities, markets and bazaars and the occupational groups in existing cities that we dealt with
