Ibn Gabirol's philosophical system and its influence on scholastic thought

The aim of this study is to scrutinize thoroughly the main characteristics of the distinctive philosophy of the Jewish philosopher Ibn Gabirol, who lived in Andalusia in the eleventh century, in the context of his works and to determine the aspects in which the thoughts in the philosopher's works influenced the philosophers in medieval Europe. Ibn Gabirol created an eclectic framework by gathering up his views on metaphysics in his work Yanbu' al-haya, certain philosophical systems, especially the thoughts of Plotinus, Augustine, Aristotle and Ibn Masarra and the thoughts in the holy scriptures and developed unique understanding of philosophy both with the understanding of God and the way he dealt with the concepts of matter, form and will. Ibn Gabirol also intellectually influenced important figures of Scolastic thought such as Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus, Bonaventura and Albertus Magnus when his work Fountain of Life was translated into Latin as Fons Vitae in the 12th century. In this sense, it is examined that the philosophical thoughts of Ibn Gabirol should be evaluated more thoroughly in order to understand the literature on philosophical thoughts and discussions in the Islamic geography and especially in Andalusia in the classical period in a more holistic way and to see the effect of Islamic thought on Western thought more clearly.
