The propositions of Averroes's logic

An understanding of the logic of Averroes, one of the most important philosophers of classical Islamic philosophy, is possible with Aristotle-centered reading. Averroes's views not only on the logic of propositions but also on all the logical system develop within the framework of Aristotle's perception of logic. However, it does not indicate that Averroes's has failed to develop the original and genuine thoughts. As a matter of fact, it will be seen in this study that Averroes's views on the terms of preposition, contingent propositions, modality and conversion are peculiar to him, which they are never sufficiently touched upon by Aristotle. For this reason, it is important to point out that this study carrying the title "The prepositions in Averroes's logic" is formed in the framework of both Averroes's original approaches and his commentaries that developed in Aristotle's context, as well as in the framework of his discussions with the other commentators of Aristotle. Our thesis is composed of three parts. In the first chapter of this thesis, I examined the terms of preposition, the structural and epistemological value of the proposition when it has more than one term, and Averroes's discussions on contingent propositions. It is understood that Averroes's develops his approach in order to defend Aristotle's views and criticize Alexander of Aphrodisias, al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā's thoughts. The remarkable point of this parts is contingent propositions. The opinions about conversion of propositions and their scientific values that put forward by Averroes from the point of views of Aristotle is assessed and compared with al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā. In the second chapter, the quality, quantity and modalities of the proposals are discussed. The topic we have been dwelling on most in this section is modalities. Because modality is one of the most discussed topics, the modality part, which contains quite original opinions, has been shaped in two qualities. The first was the determination of Averroes's position in the history of modality on the types of absolute, compulsory and possible propositions. The second is an evaluation of Averroes's intense criticism of the views of Ancient commentator being in the first place, al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā, especially on the absolute proposals. The third and final section has been devoted to the opposition relationship and its convert. Averroes's approach to problematic points such as the position of uncertain qualify propositions in relation to the opposition, the relation of subordination and contradictory situations of future timely proposals has been discussed in comparison with other philosophers, especially Aristotle. At the subject of convert, Ibn Sīnā's objections to the Aristotelian system were determined first, and then Averroes's reliance on the right of the Aristotelian system was emphasized.
