Irony in the prose works of İbrahim Abdulkadir el-Mazini

The concept of irony, which emerged through Plato's use in Socratic dialogues, initially appeared as a philosophical stance but later found its way into literature. This concept, which originated in the West and spread from Western literature to other languages and cultures, gained considerable popularity. Ibrāhīm ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Māzinī became acquainted with this concept through the works he read and was influenced by, and he frequently employed it in his writings. This thesis aims to examine the use of irony in selected prose works by Māzinī. The thesis consists of two parts. In the first part, the definition, history, and types of irony, along with its relationship to rhetorical arts in Arabic such as istiʿāra, jinās, tawrīya, madh bimā yushbihu al-dhamm, dhamm bimā yushbihu al-madh, hijw, and hazl, are analyzed. The second part addresses Māzinī's life and works, as well as the factors that led him to adopt an ironic style. In this section, examples of irony in some of his proses are identified and presented. The study also attempts to highlight its relationship with certain rhetorical arts. By drawing from the conceptual framework of irony in literature, the thesis analyzes how irony is employed in Māzinī's works and how this literary tool contributes to the meaning and impact of his works. The thesis reveals that irony serves as a fundamental element in Māzinī's works, adding depth of meaning.
