The effect of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on prosocial behaviors: The moderating role of the psychological contract

The main purpose of this study is to determine whether psychological contract sub-dimensions (transactional and relational contract) have a moderator role in the effect of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of employees working in public institutions on prosocial behavior sub-dimensions (cooperation and empathy). For this purpose, the research was conducted with the participation of 365 employees working in public institutions of Amasya province. In the collection of research data, the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation scale, adult prosociality scale and psychological contract scale were used. The obtained data were analyzed through the Process Macro application, which was added to the SPSS program as an extension. As a result of the analyses, it was concluded that the sub-dimensions of intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and psychological contract have a positive effect on the sub-dimensions of prosocial behavior. As a result of the moderator variable analysis, it was found that the transactional contract, which is a sub-dimension of the psychological contract concept, has a moderator role in the effect of intrinsic motivation on the prosocial behavior coopeeration dimension. It was concluded that the severity of the effect of intrinsic motivation on cooperation decreased when the transactional contract, which is a moderator variable, was included in the analysis. It was concluded that the relational contract, which is the other dimension of the psychological contract, has a moderator role in the relationship between extrinsic motivation and the cooperation dimension. When the relational contract, which is a moderator variable, is included in the analysis, it is concluded that it reduces the severity of the effect of extrinsic motivation on cooperation. As a result of the information obtained, suggestions were presented to researchers and practitioners.
