Hospitals in Istanbul during Abdülhamid II Period

In the last period of the westernization period of the Ottoman State, the period of Abdulhamid stands out as the period when important steps have been taken in comparison with past reforms in the field of health. The most important feature of the Abdülhamid period was that the Ottoman Empire, which suffered great losses due to epidemic diseases and wars, was seeking solutions and that the developments in the west were applied at the same time and sometimes even in Istanbul. In this period, a health system using advanced technology of the period was implemented, especially in the planning of the pavilion system developed in Europe in hospital planning. The thesis titled "Hospitals in Istanbul during Abdülhamid period" was prepared by examining in five main titles. In the first part, the aim, scope and method of thesis work are given. In the second part, the historical development of health care structures is examined, and the emergence and the architectural feud in Europe are touched upon. In the second chapter, also the concept of medicine and hospital in Turks is discussed in different periods, and the transition from the concept of the hospital to the concept of hospitalization by including the westernization process of the Ottoman State has been examined through architectural examples. In the third chapter, which was divided into Abdülhamid period, social conditions, political and political agenda of the period, events and the health politics of the Sultan during this period were examined. In the fourth chapter, information about the characteristics and classification of the hospitals subject to the thesis are given. In the fourth chapter, which constitutes the subject of the thesis, the hospitals built in Istanbul during the period of Abdülhamid were examined collectively. By going out of this study, present conditions of hospitals were researched and only some of the hospitals mentioned in the tahrir books were tried to detect their places. Hospitals were examined under different headings and classified according to their characteristics. In this study Sultan Abdulhamid's request was made to hospitals. The hospitals, which were rebuilt by Abdülhamid II in the old buildings, were also examined because they reflected the architectural and health policies of the time. In the fifth chapter, examined hospitals were evaluated in terms of function and style by using the researches and determinations and it was revealed that they protect and preserve their original positions in Istanbul.
