Abstract (EN)
SUMMARY Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of the anemia all over the world. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) datas, 43% of preschool age children and 51% of pregnant women suffers from iron deficiency anemia that affects 30% of whole world population. The iron deficiency anemia that especially more frequent in pregnancy has a simple treatment. However, if it is not managed and treated properly, it may cause several serious problems for both mother and baby health. WHO defines the iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy as, in 1st and 3rd trimesters maternal blood hemoglobin concentration below 11 g/dl and below 10,5 g/dl in 2nd trimester. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of anemia in pregnant women who applied to Adnan Menderes University obstetric clinic between January 2012 and June 2016 and determine the effect of the baby on the birth weight. In this study; the effects of second trimester (14-28 gestational weeks) hemogram parameters ( Hb, Hct, MCV, MCHC, RBC, RDW) on birth weight were assessed by examining files of pregnant whose cesarean birth or normal vaginal delivery for 37 weeks or more, except for the anemia of iron deficiency anemia for any other reason,multiple pregnancy, preeclampsia, placental abruption, bleeding placenta previa, intrauterine growth retardation, previous splenectomy story, maternal systemic diseaseand examining the files of the patients without gastrointestinal system and urinary system bleeding during pregnancy.In this study findings were analyzed by using SPSS 22.0 (IBM Corparation, Armonk, New York, United States) program. The study was conducted on 1051 pregnant women aged between 15 and 47 years old. The mean age of the cases is 29.96 ± 5.74.The hemoglobin level of 237 of the cases was below 10.5 gr / dl. It means 22.5 percent of these were anemic. Also, the birth weight of 54 of 1051 newborns was less than 2500.That is, 5.1 percent of the cases had low birth weight neonates. 247 (23.5%) of the cases had normal vaginal delivery and 804 (76.49%) of cases delivered by cesarean section. In our study, relationship between maternal secondtrimester hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCHC, RBC and RDW parameters with low birth weight is not determined. And also, we found a statistically significant correlation between last mentrual period, maternal age, gravida, parity, number of living children and birth weight of babies.In addition, we did not detected a statistically significant difference between abort number and birth weight of infants. Low birth weight is due to multifactorial reasons; we suggest that anemia of iron deficiency may be only one of these reasons and that iron deficiency support should be given to all pregnant women and preterm birth as much as possible should be avoided when considering complications developing in low birth weight babies.
