Attitude of newly married couples in their first marriage towards domestic violence and associated factors

This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine Attitude Of Newly Married Couples In Their First Marriage Towards Domestic Violence And Associated Factors The study population consisted of 359 couples applying for a marriage license in the Civil Registration Office where the study was conducted in 2015. A sample size of 64 was calculated with an effect size of 0.3, α= 0.05, power: 0.80 using G Power analysis method. Considering possible case losses in the study, the aim was to have 72 applications and the study was completed with 72 applications (72 women and men; total 144 people). The researcher provided necessary interview environment in the Civil Registration Office and face to face interviews were conducted with the people included in the study. A "Questionnaire Form" and "Attitudes towards Domestic Violence Questionnaire (ADV)" developed by the researcher in accordance with the literature were used to collect data. The data of the study was evaluated with the SPSS statistics package program (Version 21,00 Chicago IL, USA) . Data were evaluated using descriptive statistical analyses (mean, standard deviation, frequency, percentage) t-test for normal distributions, One way ANOVA; and Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis H test were used for non-normal distribution. 50.0% of the participants (n=72) were female and 50.0% (n=72) were male and the mean age was 23.75±3.84. The mean number of siblings of participants was 3. 49.3% of the participants reported to have a job. 20.8% of the participants' had low, 70.8% had medium and 8.3% had high socioeconomic status. The mean score in Attitudes towards Domestic Violence. Questionnaire was 0.31±8.52. Individuals who were elementary school graduates or less, who reported that they could accept low level of violence, who reported to believe that women could provoke violence, men should make all decisions in marriage, and those who reported to believe that women should obey their husbands had a positive attitude towards violence. Based on all the results evaluated; pre-marriage evaluation of individuals and measures taken based on the results of this evaluation can contribute to reducing domestic violence which is a common and important problem in the society.
