The effect for student achievement of the using the active learning strategy for teaching of multiplication table in mathematics lesson of second class of primary education

ABSTRACT The main aim of this study is to identify the effect of the using the active learning strategy in teaching of multiplication table in mathematics. This is an experimental study with sampled and controlled by first and final tests. Seven primary school, which are in the center of Çanakkale province, were reviewed as experimental and control groups of the study. For selecting the experimental and control group of study, we took great care to study on similar groups in terms of socio-economic and cultural levels of students. Furthermore, as selecting the groups of study, the similarity of students scores for tests concerning with the Turkish and math have been based. The experimental groups of the study were conducted on the classes 2- A and 2-B of Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Primary School, and the control group was conducted in Mustafa Kemal Primary School 64 students from experimental group and 70 students from control group were included in this study. The experimental studies were continued along 7 weeks, as 3 hours of math lesson per week. 42 activities were performed in the study and in this step the conventional education continued in control group. To gather the data for the study, a math test was applied as isochronal for the experimental and control groups in the beginning and final The math tests were applied in same week. The questions of the first and final tests were the same. The results of the first and final tests were compared with each other by "t" and "f test. The findings of study showed that, as compared with conventional method, the active learning strategy did not effect the students' success at the level of knowledge, but it increased the students' success at the levels of comprehension, application and general success. ivKey Words: Math teaching; primary education; active learning strategy; instruction of multiplication table.
