Comparison between the multiple intelligences and the academic successes of the 4th and 5th grade students in primary schools

The relationship between the multiple intelligences and the academic successes of the 4th and 5th grade students is researched in this research.The research is applied on 16 teachers and 270 students who are in 4th and 5th grade of primary school which have 3 different socio-economic properties in Küçükçekmece, Istanbul, in 2006-2007 Education Year.Student and teacher introduction forms, besides TIMI (Teele Inventory of Multiple Intelligences) test developed by Sue Teele in order to detect the multiple intelligences of the students and The Multiple Intelligences Observation Form for students developed by Ahmet Saban are used for collecting the data during this research. The findings attained from the results of these tests are evaluated by comparing the aritmetic average of the academic successes of the students.The data obtained from the research are analyzed with the help of SPSS (Statistical Packet for the Social Sciences) 13.0.It is detected there are differences between the multiple intelligence area according to The Multiple Intelligences Observation Form for students which is filled by teachers and TIMI Test which is filled by students. Also there is a positive correlation between the multiple intelligences and the academic successes of all the students according to the Multiple Intelligences Observation Form which is filled by the teachers; as the marks of their multiple intelligence area increase, their academic successes also increase. Moreover it is found out that there is not a meaningful correlation between the multiple intelligence area and the academic successes of all the students according to the TIMI Test which is applied on the students at the end of the research.Key Words: Intelligence, The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, Academic Success.
