The acquisition level of Kemalism concepts taking part in the primary school social studies course books of 4 th and 5 th grades

A new primary school curriculum was prepared based on structuralist theory in the 2004-2005 educational year in Turkey and after being put into practice in some sample schools in the beginning, it is now being carried out in all the primary schools throughout the whole country. In this project, it is aimed to survey the level of understanding and learning Kemalism Concepts in the New Social Studies Teaching Curriculum by the 4th and 5th grade primary school students. Such a study is vital to determine the targets of curriculum.This research is a survey type descriptive study carried out in the 7 schools in Zonguldak between the years 2006 and 2007. Among the survey types, general survey style was chosen and used. The area of the research is limited in the primary schools of Zonguldak. Systematically formed samples were made up of the 4th and 5th grade primary students (367 person) chosen using the random technique.A questionnaire consisting of 25 questions for 4th grades and 30 questions for 5th grades was prepared by the researcher. In the analyse of the datas, frequency (f) and percentage (%) calculations were made using ?SPSS 15? (Statistical Package for Social Sciences).In this study important results were achieved about the learning level of the students in concepts of Kemalism subjects. It was found out that the learning level of 4th grades is % 73 and 5th grades is % 70. These levels change depending on the schools and the districts. It is compulsory to increase the conditions of the schools up to the desired level to do away with the differences.Key Words: Primary School, Social Studies, Kemalism, Concept
