An Investigation on the relationship between the styles of homework of 5th grade elementary school students and their academic achievement

Dr. Ayten IFLAZOĞLUJune 2007, 78 pagesThe main aim of this study is the determination of the relationship between thestyles of homework of 5th grade elementary students and their academic success.Furthermore, in the scope of this aim the relationship between the styles of homeworkof 5th grade elementary students and the levels of their academic achievement, theirsuccess in homework in the frame of their own perception, their attitudes towardshomework and whether the styles of homework revealed differences regarding socio -economic levels and sex was determined.The research study is a descriptive study based on the relational scan model. Thesamples of the present study were built of 15 schools from the district Ceyhan in Adanaand 719 students attaining the 5th grades of these schools. The styles of homework inthis study were determined according to ?The Scale of Determining HomeworkMotivation and Homework Style? developed by Hong and Milgram, (1996), theirperceived success and attitude was determined with the help of 8 items (Hong andMilgram, 1996) added to this scale, and their socio-economic levels were determinedbased on ?The Questionnaire of Determining Socio-Economic Levels? developed byBacanlı (1997).In the frame of the outcome of this study, it has been determined that themajority of students prefer being motivated by their family and teachers, having snacksin-between the process of doing homework and prefer a luminous study environment.vBesides, it has been observed that many students prefer accompany of authoritativefigures, and studying with the aid of previously made homework and mates. Therelationship between the styles of homework of students and their academic success hasbeen found significant in the perspective of motivation, having snacks, visual andstructural sub-factors. In addition, it has been observed that there are statisticaldifferences between styles of homework and perceived homework achievement andattitude, sex and socio-economic level and motivation, and the sub-factors ofcontact, structuring, visual and authoritative figures.Key Words: Achievement and Attitude of Perceived Homework, Homework,Homework Motivation, Styles of Homework
