Evaluating the unit of Turkiye'miz which takes place in 6th grade social studies course program in terms of teacher views

The main purpose of the Social Studies course is to gain students important social skills to help their socialization and to train them as a good citizens. For that reason, an effective teaching should be realized in primary schools to benefit from Social Studies course at maximum level. For this pupose the main problem of this study includes: What is the present situation of ?Turkiyemiz? unit in terms of aim, content, teachinglearning and evaluation processes? What is the recommendation of teachers on teaching this unit more effectively and properly to the aims. Evalution of present program is being tried to make via limited topic. In this descriptive study fisrtly literature was scanned related to topic, then a questionnaire was prepared based on literature and experts opinions to collect data. Study was realized to Social Studies Teachers who taught at 6th grade in 2005-2006 instruction year in Sanlıurfa provincial centre and Birecik. Finally data were interpreted which were collected from teachers. Questionnaires were returned at %100 level. This study has five sections. Place and importance of Social Studies course, Social Sciences and Social Studies teaching, Social Studies Program and its elements takes place in section one. In the second section, there is theoretical information about historcial development of Social Studies teaching in the world and Turkey, historical development of compulsory education in our country and approach of our country to Social :Studies teaching. Related researches takes place in section three. In fourth section followed studies are explained in realizing research. Research method, sample, collecting and analyzing data are mentioned in this section. Pesonel information of teachers, findings and iterpretation about teachers opinions and recommendations on Turkiyemiz Unit which takes place in 6th Grade Social Studies Program is explained in fifth section. Finally thesis study is completed by mentioning results which based on findings and recommendations which based on results. Applied data collection instrument consists of four personel information questions, fourty two questions about present situation of Turkiyemiz unit which takes place in 6th grade Sociakl Studies Course Program and eighteen questions about recommendations fort he future. Providing validity and reliability of the data collection instrument is considered. SPSS ( Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) program was used for processing collected research data and all statistical analysis. Data was not only analyzed through frequency and percentages but also analyzed through x square (x²) technique. ``C?? (contingency) values were calculated for defining relations between variables.P<0.05 reliability level was accepted for testing mean between variables. After analyzing data and statistical analysis these results were reached: 1. Turkiyemiz unit which is evaluated by teachers views and which takes place at 6th grade Social Studies course program is useful and appropriate in general (%57.8). 2. Turkiyemiz unit which takes place at 6th grade Social Studies course program isn?t effective and suitable in terms of aim, content, teaching- learning process and evaluation elements. Turkiyemiz unit which takes place at 6th grade Social Studies course program should be evaluated and developed by all researhers and experts who are interested in program evaluating and developing in terms of four dimensions of the program for more fruitfull, successful, effective and useful instruction. Also inservice training programs should be organized for Social Studies teachers for making them aware of innovations in programs and units. Incentive and encouaring legal framework should be organized for tachers.
