The effect of the multiple intelligences theory on grade-8 students` achievement in the topic of acid and base

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Multiple Intelligences Theorycompared to the Traditional Teaching Method on grade-8 students? achievement in the topicof acid and base and to indentify the appropriatteness of Multiple Intelligences Theory aspectof the elementary science curriculumIn this study, Pre-Post Test Control Group Design was used. The study, consisted oftotal 60 students from 8-B (N=30) and 8-D (N=30) in Istanbul-Beyoğlu Ihsan ŞerifElementary School, was carried out about 3 normal class-hour in per week, during 4 weeksin 2005-2006 fall semester. It was applied to pretests during the first week and also posttestsduring the last week. The topic of acid and base was taught with students of control group,was randomly selected between two groups, according to the traditional teaching method,while the students of experimental group were taught according to the Theory of MultipleIntelligences. Both the lessons of two groups were carried out by the researcher. Theeducation of control and exprimental group was completed in 7 lesson-hours.In the begining of this study, The Prior Knowledge Test, The Achievement Test andQATS was applied. In the last of the study, AT and QATS applied again probably theposttest. Also this tests were respectively applied to identify the effect of two differentmethods on the students? achievement and attitude toward science.The data obtained from this study were assessed by using cmputer SPSS program. Inassessing the hypothesis, ANCOVA analysis and MANCOVA analysis were used. Themeaningful level of the results was accepted 0,05.The results of statistical analysis indicated that the teaching activities based on theMultiple Intelligences Theory meaningfully contributed on the students? achievement intopic of acid and base and attitude toward science.
