The Role of computer assisted instruction in the teaching of expressions among primary education eight grade students

11 ABSTRACT In this research, effects of the method of Computer Assisted Instruction and Traditional Method of Instruction on Expressions the 8th grade students' academic achievement in mathematics were investigated. This research was carried out with 50 8th students who attended Merkez Primary School and 23 Ağustos Primary School in the first semester of 2001-2002 academic year. One class from Merkez Primary School and one class from 23 Ağustos Primary School were through random selection, an done experimental an done and control group were formed in each school. Before treatment, there was significant difference between the experimental groups through Computer Assisted Instruction and Expressions was studied through Traditional Method of Instruction in the control groups. After the treatment, the students in the experimental and control groups took the posttest. One way ANOVA was used to find out whether there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups according to the students' scores in the pretest and posttest. The experimental and control groups in each school were combined and thus, one experimental an done control group were formed. The Independent Samples T Test was used to find out whether there was a significant difference between the combined experimental groups and the combined control groups in both schools in terms of academic achievement in mathematics in the posttest. In the light of the findings of the research, it was revealed that the Computer Assisted Instruction was significantly more effective on mathematics achievement than the Traditional Method of Instruction, and it was revealed that the students whose fathers had higher education were significantly more successful than those students whose fathers attended High Schools, Secondary Schools or Primary Schools. Some suggestions were made based on the results of the research.
