Primary school science education the use of concept maps in 6 th grade biology subjects and their effect on success

Biology subjects are the most difficult ones for students while teaching science. Some of them are about the "Insight into the internal structure of beings" unit. While teaching these subjects it is known that students obtain many wrong concepts. It is vital to use new methods instead of classical methods in order to present this One of these new methods in teaching with the help of concept maps. The main aim of this research is to examine the influence of science classes that were carried out with the help of concept maps on student conceptualization. Additionally, this research aims to prevent wrong concepts about biology subjects and increase success by the help of concept maps. This research is in essay type pre-post test control group study. One of the experiment group used concept maps while the other group used classical teaching methods. The research was carried out in Selçuklu - a district of Konya - in Hakim Ömer Onsun Primary School with two different classes consisting of 100 6th grade students. It was carried out in the year of 2001-2002 in second semester. XC. YÜKSEKÖ?RETİM KUEOUj)IV After doing the preliminary studies "Insight into the internal structure of beings" unit was applied by the help of classical method in control group and concept maps in experiment group. The success of both group was evaluated by pre - post test. The results are expressive and t-test was used to reveal the difference between implementations. The statistically evaluated results show that concept maps help students to conceptualize scientific subjects correctly. Further more, concept maps which one used in science lessons remove correct concepts and increase success.
