The evaluation of the competency levels of science and technology teachers within the process of education and training in secondary stage of primary education according to some variables

This study is a descriptive research, through which it has been targeted to evaluate the competency levels of the teachers of Science and Technology Class considering the secondary stage of primary education, and to evaluate the mentioned competencies in terms of sex, seniority, the kind of alma mater, the department that the teacher graduated, the settlement of occupation, and the physical and social conditions of the school.51 science and technology teachers, who have been teaching in Hatay city centre and in the urban villages and towns, participated in the research during the spring term of 2006-2007 Education and Training Year.Within the scope of this research, 51 teachers were observed by joining their classes, and besides ten of the participants were interviewed.Percentage, frequency analyses, arithmetical average, standard deviation and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA)has been utilized for the analysis of the observation results. p< .05 confidence interval has been accepted in determining whether there has been an expressive difference among the variables.Besides, the descriptive analysis has been applied in the analyses of the qualitative data that were obtained from the interviews done with the teachers. The findings that were figured out from the research have been summarized below.1.Related with the application of the education and training process, when the competency levels of the science teachers participated in the study were examined, it has been conformed that, primarily, the principles of ?using the tone of voice efficiently?, ?revision of the lesson? and ?providing a democratic education environment? were taken into consideration.2.It has been understood that both the competency levels of science teachers in planning and in application process did not present any difference according to their sex.3. Considering the order of seniority, it has been observed that the veterans of the science teachers had the highest competency levels in planning and application processes.4. According to the kind of alma mater, considering planning and application processes, it has been found that the competency levels of the science teachers graduated from Faculty of Education were expressively higher than that of science teachers graduated from Faculty of Science and Letters.5. When the competency levels related with the planning process were examined according to the department that the teacher graduated from, it has been found that the competency levels of the science teachers graduated from science teaching, physics teaching and biology teaching programmes were expressively higher than that of science teachers graduated from teaching chemistry programme, biology department and physics department.According to the department that the teacher graduated from, when the competency levels related with the application process were analysed, it has been found that the competency levels of the science teachers graduated from science teaching and physics teaching departments were expressively higher than that of science teachers graduated from biology teaching programmes, biology department, teaching chemistry programme, chemistry department and physics department.6. It has been figured out that, considering in both planning and application processes, the competency levels of the teachers working in city centres were meaningfully higher that that of the teachers working in urban villages and towns.7. It has been observed that the competency levels on planning and applying the education and training process of the science teachers, who perceive the physical and social condition of their school as very good, good and as average, were significantly higher than that of the teachers who perceive them as bad.Keywords: Qualification, Science Teaching
