The Effects of Homework and Project on Mathematics Achievement at Middle School Level Bülent Nuri ÖZCAN In today's world, especially in the last 25 years, the importance of mathematics which is an old branch of science as life has been increasing everyday while a rapid period in the production of knowledge and in the development of technology is being experienced. The increasing importance of mathematics pushed the scientists towards different ways of research in teaching mathematics and caused them to make various studies so that the society could take more advantage of mathematics. The goal is to enable the students to gain success in learning mathematics. Within this framework, this research dealt with the relationship between mathematics homework and success in mathematics to which no importance was given in our country, although many researches have been accomplished in the world. Initially, information was given about the role and the function of homework and projects in learning, the points that should be taken into consideration while giving homework, the evalution of homework and project and its effect to student's success, and about the subjects of the place of homework in the Turkish National Educational System. Research has been carried out with the Sth and 8th grade students in primary schools in Gönen, Balıkesir, in the academic year of 2002-2003 and with the 5th grade teachers and mathematics teachers, and the students of the Mathematics Teaching Department of Dokuz Eylül University. The data gained after the questionare prepared and applied have been put in some charts using MS Excel and MS Word, and comments have been made in the light of these data.
