An analysis of the idioms and proverbs used in the books of Turkish writers which are included in the list of 100 basic works recommended for secondary education

100 Basic Works for Secondary Education are presented to the public opinion on 19th August, 2004 with the 2005/70 numbered circular by the Ministry of National Education and the aim of this research is to identify the ?idioms and proverbs? used in these works written by Turkish writers. Owing to this study, the role of books will be shown in transferring the idioms and proverbs which are a part of our cultural heritage. Also, we will be able to learn how much these books contribute to the vocabulary of children. Besides, we think that the research will help the teachers who want to prepare classroom activities for their students. ?Descriptive Field Work Method? is used in the research. The books which are written by Turkish authors are chosen among the recommended 100 Basic Works list of the Ministry of National Education. First the idioms and proverbs are identified and then they were copied to the computer. ?Deyimler ve Atasözleri 1 ve 2? dictionaries written by Ömer Asım AKSOY are used as the resource. As a consequence, idioms are used in all of the books written by Turkish authors but in 32 of them there are no proverbs. Idioms are mostly used in novels whereas proverbs are mostly used in story books. ?Barbaros Hayrettin Geliyor? takes the first rank in the usage density of idioms and ?Aldı Sazı Anadolu? takes the first rank in the usage density of proverbs.
