Elementary students' attitudes towards mathematics lesson and achievement motivation

The purpose of this research is to study (a) primary school students? attitudes towardsmathematics lessons (b) the relationship between attitudes towards mathematics lesson andgender, sosyo economic status of school, educational status of students? mother and father,type of school (c) their achievement motivations (d) the relationship between theirachievement motivations and gender, sosyo economic status of school, educational status ofstudents? mother and father, type of school and (e) the relationship between attitudes towardsmathematics lesson and achievement motivation.The research was conducted across 3 private and 11 public primary schools and on 715students in those schools. The schools included in the sample were elected by the stratifiedsampling method.The data were gathered by the ?Attitudes Towards Mathematics Scale? developed byBaykul (1990) and by the ?Achievement Motivation Scale? developed by Ellez (2004).Arithmetic Mean, Standard Deviation, Frequency, Percentage, t-Test, Analysis ofVariance, Scheffée Test, LSD Test and the Test of Significance of the Difference Between thePercentages were employed to analyze the data of the research.The research has discerned that students? attitudes towards mathematics are significantlyvary in terms of social status of school, the educational status of mother and father and type ofschool but they don?t significantly vary in terms of gender.The achievement motivation of primary students? vary significantly in terms of gender,sosyo-economic status of school, educational status of mother and type of school but theydon?t significantly vary in terms of educational status of father.It has determined that there is a positive but weak relationship between students?attitudes towards mathematics and their achievement motivation.PDF created with pdfFactory Pro trial version www.pdffactory.com
